Double Oak - Friday Updates (08/18/2023)

UPDATE: School Traffic at Bridlewood Blvd and Waketon Road

Chief Rivas and the Mayor met with the principal of Downing Middle School on Friday, August 11th, to discuss the auto traffic and pedestrian flow of the students crossing Waketon Road.  The principal and the school resource officer are monitoring the situation, and they will do an excellent job communicating with the parents to ensure safe passage for all students across Waketon Road.

As a reminder, Double Oak has a crossing guard that crosses students at the corner of Kings/Waketon and Cross Timbers.  This is the ONLY safe place for students to cross.  There is no crosswalk or crossing guard at the intersection of Bridlewood and Waketon.  Parents, please refrain from having your students cut across the street.  With the three lanes of traffic is more dangerous than ever to attempt a crossing there.

Double Oak Citizens, please obey the speed limits and watch for any unusual movements in the street area; after all, it could be a student trying to cross.

As they say in Texas, “Be Safe Ya-All.”

Double Oak Town Council Town Treasurer Position - UPDATE

The town treasurer position is still open.  There have been some interviews and a few more to be had.

Since we are already into the budget season for Double Oak, the need to fill the position is essential, but not necessarily in a hurry to do so, and proper due diligence will take precedence over a quick decision.  Anyone who is still interested, don't hesitate to get in touch with Eileen Kennedy at eileen.kennedy@doubleoak.texas.gov.

Please send your qualifications along with your request.

We appreciate their inquiry into volunteering with the town.

Thank you.

2023-2024 Budget Process

The first pass at the 2023-2024 Budget is in process.  The town is doing the budget differently than in the past. Earlier this week, the Town Administration, Public Works, Courts, DOPD, and IT were provided the worksheets to be filled out for the first pass at the budget.  The Town Council was also included in the communications so they could be ready for the compiled version of the first pass.  The first pass is expected to be back to the mayor this weekend to be consolidated and shared with the town council.

Monday, 8/21/2023, the town council will vote on the following agenda items so the budget process can move forward.  These votes are formalities that must take place for Double Oak to move to an approved budget in September.

  1. Discussion, consideration, and action on accepting the 2023 certified appraisal roll received from the Denton County Appraisal District.
  2. Discussion, consideration, and action on the proposed Ad Valorem Tax rate.
  3. Discussion, consideration, and action on setting the Public Hearings dates for the proposed 2023-2024 fiscal year:

  • The 1st Public Hearing on Budget and Tax Rate on Tuesday, September 5th, 2023, at 7:00pm
  • The 2nd Public Hearing on Budget and Tax Rate on Monday, September 18th, 2023, at 7:00pm

Please add these dates to your calendars regarding the Double Oak budgeting process.

Double Oak EMS Agreement with Flower Mound Fire/EMS Department

Mayor Johnson met with the Flower Mound Fire Department Chiefs this week to discuss the contract for EMS services between the Town of Flower Mound and the Town of Double Oak.  Since 2016 the Town of Double Oak has contracted for EMS services through Flower Mound Fire/EMS.

Flower Mound EMS has been an outstanding partner to Double Oak and works with our Double Oak Volunteer Fire Department to provide the best life safety coverage in North Texas.  We are so lucky to have these two GREAT organizations available to Double Oak citizens in our times of need.  Our DOVFD is the “BEST” volunteer fire department in North Texas and rivals most of the rest of the state.

Our agreement with Flower Mound is six years old and needs updating.  What the town pays for these services is no longer affordable to Flower Mound EMS.  In the coming week, both towns expect to compromise on new rates that will positively impact both towns and still provide the excellent coverage the town receives today.

These rates will be shared at a future Town Council meeting and must be approved by the council once they are agreed upon.

More to follow on this topic.

Points to Ponder:

“Eat whatever you like because . . .

The inventor of the treadmill died at the age of 54.

The inventor of gymnastics died at the age of 57.

The world bodybuilding champion died at age 41.

And then - The KFC inventor died at 94, Nutella at 88, and Hennessy at 98.

How did doctors conclude that exercise prolongs life when the rabbit is always jumping but lives for around two years, and the turtle that doesn’t exercise at all lives 200 years?

So, rest, chill, eat, drink, and enjoy life.”
