Double Oak Police Department's New Speed Tracker Trailer

On August 21st, at the Town Council Meeting, the council approved 5-0 to purchase a Sam Radar Speed Trailer and ten new speed limit signs to post around town.  The trailer arrived early, and Chief Rivas put it to work.  DOPD is still learning to use the trailer, and we wanted to share some statistics from our first use.

Location:  281 Simmons Road, Double Oak, TX.  The posted speed on Simmons Road is 30 mph.

Map of Double Oak with Radar Trailer Location

Dates:  Wednesday 8/30/2023 to Tuesday 9/5/2023 – (7) days

Total Vehicle Count:  13,990

Traffic Direction:

South moving towards the trailer:  6,720 vehicles, 291 or 4.3%, were over the posted speed limit, with the average violation speed being 32.14 mph.  The average speed was 25.62 mph, with a maximum speed detected of 42 mph.

North moving away from the trailer:  7,270 vehicles, 2,799 or 38.5%, were over the posted speed limit, with the average violation speed being 33.31 mph.  The average speed was 29.43 mph, with a maximum speed of 54 mph.

This is just a sampling of the data that DOPD can mine from this type of technology.

Double Oak has become a “pass thru” town with a traffic increase on 407.  With Simmons, Cedarcrest, Tanglewood (north/south), and Waketon and Kings (east/west).  Once we mine data over a period, this technology will allow the Chief and Assistant Chief and our officers to patrol these busy roadways better to keep our town safe.

There will be more to share in the coming months on the data collected from this trailer.  So please stay tuned and slow down, Double Oak Police Department is monitoring!
