Mark Dieterich, New Town Council Member Appointed at the June 5th Town Council Meeting

Mark Dieterich was appointed to the open council seat for the Double Oak town council on Monday evening, June 5th.  Mark filled the vacated council seat of Patrick Johnson, who was elected Mayor and will complete his term on the council.

Mark has been a Double Oak resident for 17 years and is married with two sons.  Mark volunteered for the Double Oak Volunteer Fire Department and provided the Christmas music and support for the annual Double Oak Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony.  Mark is a dedicated citizen who annually enters the “Couch Potato” couch float in our Double Oak Fourth of July parade.  Mark has worked for over 30 years in telecommunications and looks forward to serving the citizens and the town of Double Oak on the town council.  “We are excited to have Mark join our town council, and his future service to the citizens and town of Double Oak is greatly appreciated,” said Double Oak Mayor Patrick Johnson.

If you see Mark, reach out and congratulate him on his appointment.

Important Communication from the Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem, and Chief of Police

There have been flyers put in some citizens’ mailboxes in the past few days regarding one of our town police officers.  A non-Double Oak Citizen distributed these flyers in response to a traffic violation the individual had received by our town officer earlier this week.

As soon as these flyers were discovered, our Double Oak Police Department working with citizens’ input, was able to identify the individual and contacted them regarding this incident.

The Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem are working closely with the Chief of Police on this incident.  However, the Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem, and the Chief can assure our citizens that our town officer handled the traffic stop courteously and professionally while patrolling for the safety of our streets.

We cannot share further details since this is still an ongoing investigation.

Message from Double Oak Police Department

Before anyone is lawfully allowed in Double Oak to go door to door selling items or services, they must obtain a permit from the town and have it visibly displayed on their person. The permit will have their photo and the Double Oak logo on it.

I encourage our citizens to be aware of the individuals going door to door in the community. Depending on the services or merchandise they are trying to solicit, many are not from our community and are career criminals. These individuals will attempt to conduct a conversation by asking questions to obtain information such as how many people live in the home, how many are home at the time, what you do for a living, etc. They will try to talk their way into your homes. The most recent solicitors that our officers stopped were from out of state. These individuals had extensive criminal histories. These subjects were arrested in the past for Possession of Stolen Items, Burglary/Burglary of Vehicle, Theft of Goods, Armed Robbery, Evading Police, Firearm by a Felon, Unlawful Imprisonment, Assault W/Intent to do Great Harm, and Aggravated Assault W/Deadly Weapon. Combined, they had been arrested 16 times.

If a solicitor comes to your door, do not let them in your residence or get into a conversation with them. If they do not have a permit, decline their service politely. Please be sure to close the door and lock it.

Immediately call Denton County dispatch on the NON-EMERGENCY at 940-349-1600 ext. 9. Give dispatch your address, a description of the solicitor, and the direction they left.

Double Oak Volunteer Fire Department Updates

Many citizens often wonder, if they need help from our local FD but don't consider the need enough of an emergency to call and tie up 911, what should they do? As always, if it is an emergency or could be potentially an emergency, call 911. But if that annoying smoke detector is chirping, a low battery and it is too high up, or you locked your keys in your car, and there isn't anyone (or pet) in danger, there are options to getting help without calling 911.

Your first option is to call the FD direct at 972-539-7683; we often have personnel at the station taking care of equipment or apparatus. The second option is to call the Sheriff's Office’s non-emergency number and ask them to dispatch the DOVFD. Their number is 940-349-1600, then press 9 at the options list.  Please don’t be afraid or embarrassed to call; we volunteer to serve and will be happy to help.

As a reminder:  DOVFD is preparing for this year’s July 4th festivities. The parade and picnic will be held on Tuesday, July 4. The parade will begin at 9:30 at the intersection of Simmons and Cross Timbers Dr. and will course down Cross Timbers Drive ending at John B Wright Park. The picnic will start at 10:00, with our favorite band Triple Lindy providing festive music.

As in years past, we will have food and beverages, bounce houses and water slides, a silent auction, and much more. Our members are out selling raffle tickets with $500 gift cards to Lowes, Academy, and our favorite Old Town Market as prizes.

If you would like to provide donations for the Silent Auction or volunteer for the event, please get in touch with Chief Heimerdinger at Chief552@dovfd.org.

Thank you from the DOVFD, and stay safe. And as usual, if interested in joining the FD, please stop by on Monday nights at 7 PM or fill out an application at www.dovfd.org.

John B. Wright Park Pet Waste Health Concerns

The trash receptacle located at John B. Wright Park is for discarded pedestrian trash from the use of the picnic area.

However, the park trash receptacle has, in the past and most recently, been used to discard pet waste. When the trash receptacle is filled with pet waste, it leads to health concerns such as…

  • Foul Odor
  • Pests (Flies)
  • Rodents
  • Transmission of Disease

Please be kind to others who may use the park for family picnics, reading a book, or bird watching while seated at the park benches. Continue to pick up pet waste, but do not dispose of it in the trash can at the park.

CoServ Utility Work

CoServ has replaced all the utility poles and continues to make progress on upgrading the electrical system. The projected date to conclude all work is June 19th, weather permitting.

Double Oak Hazardous Waste Day Saturday, September 16th, 2023

Double Oak town administration has confirmed the date with Republic Services for our Hazardous Waste Day.  It will be Saturday, September 16th.  We will provide times and details as the date gets closer.  We will move this item to the reminders section in future Friday Updates.

Please mark your calendars.
